If you have a DLSR with a detachable lens you can create microscopic images.
  1. Release the lens being very careful not to touch the glass on either side
  2. Flip the lens so the front end is now pressed against the camera facing the mirrors inside
  3. Looking through the viewfinder, move about 3-5 inches from a surface (eg fabric, natural form, newspaper text ext)
  4. You will have to move the whole camera and lens to find your focus (this can be quite tricky!!)

Development ideas:

Open images in Photoshop and try the following things:
  • Invert the image (command 'I')
  • Try creating a grid of your successful shots
  • Juxtapose your macro image with a normal shot
  • Crop a small, interesting section and enlarge to create an abstract image
  • Add text

John Baldessari is a contemporary artist, who uses photography, text, collage and paint to create thought provoking images.  His book "Throwing three balls in the air to get a straight line" was a series of photographs documenting his attempts to throw three balls in the air and capture them when in a line (also see: http://abtarts.weebly.com/blog/john-baldessarri).

  • Collect unbreakable objects eg magazines, balls, paint brushes etc.
  • Find a safe space like an empty playground.
  • In pairs: one person throw the object in the air while the other tries to capture the object in flight.
  • Try 2 objects.
  • Swap

Technical stuff:
  • You will need to set fast shutter speed in order to capture your object in motion
  • Experiment with shutter speeds: slow to blur object
  • Try tracking your object to blur the background

We spend a lot of time focusing on what we are photographing but sometimes the power of photography is to make the viewer want to know what is happening outside of the frame.  This sense of intrigue will persuade the viewer to return to that image again and again.

Create a series of images that suggests the presence of something that is out of the frame.

Tips:

  • Use compositional devises like lines to direct the viewers eyes out of frame
  • Create dramatic tension by having your subject look beyond the frame or use an empty seat to suggest human presence
  • Try to capture a transitional moment, someone walking out of frame
